Lots of snow, but those who could make it enjoyed a really entertaining talk & we got an understanding of what people are trying to do to help the environment around us.Longnor WI Rivers Talk!
Andy gave us a valuable insight into important
issues like the consequences of human interference in river
management and the role of rivers in the delicate balance of the
ecosystem, and described local places of conservation such as
Charles Cotton’s famous fishing temple at Beresford Hall near
Hartington. We learnt about the methods used to test the health
and cleanliness of a river, such as the BMWP (biological marker
working party score), which is based on the principle that
different aquatic invertebrates have varying tolerances towards
pollutants in the water. We then had a chat and enjoyed herbal
teas, coffees and a biscuit - kindly provided by Kate Wyatt
