2012 was a great year for the Longnor Area Womens Institute. We also took part in the Jubilee Party & the Church flower festival.
2012 - End of year report!
Well, the New Year is on us, festivities over and the prospect of work looming for many of us. The ladies of Longnor WI have far more than work and household chores on our agenda, however: with the completion of our 2013 programme of events, we have another wonderful year of creative meetings and enjoyable and informative talks to look forward to.
For our November meeting last year we all attended Jill Hine’s ever-popular floral decorations workshop at Longnor School. Jill has given us a workshop once before, in our first year, and this time she taught us how to make a Christmas Ball for hanging either inside or outside the house. The creations made by the Longnor ladies were all wonderfully varied – some were small, some were large, some were full of foliage and some were decorated with ribbons and pins.
On the 12th December we had our Christmas party in the school hall. The local ceilidh band entertained us royally with jigs and reels and the mulled wine flowed. Heartfelt thanks go to all our ladies who contributed to the buffet with delicious homemade quiche, savouries, dips, cheesecakes and mince pies. Then we all went home to think about preparing for the Christmas holidays.
Just a few of the events we have to look forward to next year are rag rug making courtesy of the Threshing Barn in Bradnop, pottery, a Body Shop party, a talk on the rivers Dove and Manifold, and willow weaving with Wheatcroft Willow. Longnor Area WI is a modern WI, a group of ladies of all ages and interests with a crafty bent, and we welcome members from outside the village and already have members from Buxton and other villages in our ranks.
Do come along to our next meeting at 7pm at Longnor Fire Station on Wednesday 16th January. This is a talk on the two rivers Longnor village lies between, the Manifold and the Dove, given by Andy Heath, who works for the rivers authority. The cost of attending is 50p for WI members and just £3.50 for visitors. Programmes are now available from Carolyn Chambers, WI secretary, that’s carolynchambers@btinternet.com. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us for an electronic copy and with any questions you may have about joining Longnor Area WIYears Programme
